For most of my childhood, my family lived paycheck-to-paycheck; just one emergency away from homelessness. Neighbors would leave groceries on our
porch—helping us get through the week. That’s what community meant to me.
Today, too many of our Jeffco neighbors experience that same food and housing insecurity, and the values of community that drove neighbors to support my family ultimately inspired me to run for office. First, to win a seat on the Lakewood City Council, and now, to run for State House: everyone deserves a fair shot at a good life and the opportunity to thrive.
After earning my master’s in music therapy and working in both a Children’s Hospital and a nursing home, I learned to honor the generation who came before while lifting up the generations to come. That drove the nonprofit work I devoted myself to as a therapist for kids and adults with disabilities. I advocated to protect their Medicaid services, while fighting for myself and my colleagues to secure a living wage and pay equity.
In 2018, I started a choir for folks who were stroke survivors. Many had lost the ability to speak fluently, but we could still sing together. We celebrated that. My focus, both as a therapist and a city councilor, has been about finding creative solutions to help people live their best life. At a time when Republicans offer only more chaos and cruelty, I believe that we as Democrats owe people a different path: hope.
That’s why, as City Councilor, I’ve worked hard to help rebuild a local economy that works for working families. As your state representative, I will lead on pay equity for women and Coloradans of color, invest in more affordable childcare, and protect funding for Jeffco public schools. We need folks who are willing to roll up their sleeves, do the hard work, and find creative solutions to tough issues that affect the lives of everyday Coloradans– like making our community a place people can afford to live in, protecting our Colorado air and water for future generations, and increasing access to mental health care for kids in schools.
When I challenged a Republican incumbent for my city council race, the odds were against me. Despite multiple attempts, no one had beat an incumbent in Lakewood for sixteen years. With hard work, I earned the trust of my neighbors and community. Together, we flipped the seat and won by nearly 20 points.
I understand that support is earned—not assumed. Taking nothing for granted is how we not only keep this seat blue, but ensure Democratic leadership at the statehouse so that we continue to pass policy that matches our values.
